Risk Managment Award Program
PERMA members and their staff regularly take steps to enhance risk management activities within their agencies, establish best practices that protect PERMA’s pooled programs, and implement programs designed to make for safer workplaces. These activities reduce the frequency and severity of claims.
In February 2025, the Executive Committee approved an award program to publicly acknowledge, and validate the efforts of, PERMA member risk management successes. The Executive Committee would like all members to play a role in recognizing excellent risk management efforts at member agencies and thus has established a nomination process.
Award Nomination Procedures:
- Staff will distribute the award program description and rules annually, at the beginning of the calendar year, through the newsletter and directly to Board and Alternate members.
- Nominations must be submitted to the Deputy Executive Director between January 1st and September 30th on the award nomination form.
- Nominations may be made by members, member employees, elected officials, volunteers, PERMA staff, or vendor partners.
- Self-nominations are acceptable.
- Staff will review the nomination forms and present recommendations to the Executive Committee at its November meeting.
- The Executive Committee will select award recipients for presentation at the December Board of Directors meeting.
- Awards will be made to the member agency’s council or governing board by PERMA staff
Award Categories:
Approximately three awards will be presented annually at the December Board meeting in one or more of the following categories:
- Excellence in Risk Management
- Exemplary Risk Management Culture
- Outstanding Safety and Loss Control Program

Award winners:
In addition to an engraved award presented at a Board or Council meeting, agencies that win a risk management award will receive $2,500 toward a risk management related item or expense. The award funds must be used within twelve months (e.g. December 2025 award winners must use the funds by December 2026).
